John Bickford fell in love with basketball at 12, but he didn't play until his senior year of high school. Sports were frowned upon in the strict religious home he grew up in, so he had to rebel just to play. "If this ball doesn't go in, it's like my eternal salvation is on the line."
He bet on himself and made it to college. Then junior year: torn ACL. Surgery. Six months later, torn meniscus. Surgery. Three months later, torn meniscus again. Three knee surgeries in one year, at 22.
In this segment:
- Falling in love with the game in a family that didn't encourage sports
- The pressure of rebelling just to play
- ACL, meniscus, meniscus again
- Why the injuries turned into a blessing: learning how to come back fast
Those three surgeries are where his return-to-play work started.
