Dave's breakfast club team at Foss: turnover after turnover, kids who couldn't catch the ball. Dave kept throwing it to them anyway. "This is the time to mess up."
John Bickford sees the same thing everywhere: an irrational fear of missing. Kids miss one shot in practice and their body language is gone. So he asks them: why does missing a shot matter so much to you? "If you get to the root of that, you're probably gonna become a better shooter."
In this segment:
- Coaching body language instead of benching mistakes
- If you're good enough, you're gonna miss about 50,000 shots
- JDam on playing for coaches who pulled players for missing a shot
- The open-gym lesson: if you work on the shot, shoot it
- Why Steve Kerr's Warriors play so free, and what happens to LaMelo when coaches pull him after turnovers
It's just a sport. Let them play free.
